What each student understands

What they read, what they asked the tutor, and how they answered — read together as a picture of where each student actually is.

That picture drives the next explanation, the next hint, and the next question. A student who has not got it does not get the same answer twice.

Q4 · OPEN-ENDED

A plant is kept in the dark for 48 hours, then a leaf is tested for starch. Explain the result, and describe how to make it a fair test.

Student answer

The test is negative because the plant used up its starch in the dark. With no light it can't photosynthesise so it can't make more. To be fair I'd use another plant left in the light as a control.

Criteria
  • 1 mark: Starch already in the leaf is used up while it is kept in the dark
  • 2 marks: Links no light → no photosynthesis → no new starch made
  • 2 marks: A control that differs only in light (e.g. foil over half the leaf)

Frequently Asked

What educators ask about LearnLab

What is LearnLab?

LearnLab is Upstack AI's education platform. It combines an AI course builder, an automatic grading engine (including STEM and quantitative problems), conversational AI tutors, and per-student analytics — turning coursework into a measurable learning loop. It is used by universities, schools, and training providers worldwide.

How does LearnLab grade automatically?

Educators upload their materials and marking rubric. LearnLab's assessment engine marks submissions against that rubric — including structured and STEM problems — returns written feedback, and feeds every result into per-student analytics. A human-in-the-loop review step keeps educators in control of final grades.

Which subjects and question types does LearnLab support?

LearnLab handles STEM and quantitative subjects such as mathematics and the sciences, alongside written and structured assessments. It supports auto-graded problem sets, short-answer questions, and rubric-based marking of longer responses.

Is LearnLab suitable for universities and large cohorts?

Yes. LearnLab runs a three-year departmental deployment at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, marking university physics across cohorts of several hundred students. Alongside that, lecturers and researchers at 50+ universities worldwide have signed up individually and brought their own course material. It scales to large cohorts while keeping analytics at the individual-student level.

How do LearnLab's AI tutors work?

LearnLab's conversational tutors guide students through material using Socratic questioning and targeted practice, available on demand. They are designed to support instructors rather than replace them, with guardrails that discourage over-reliance and keep students working toward understanding.

Is LearnLab aligned with the EU AI Act?

LearnLab is built aligned by design with the principles of the EU AI Act — transparency, human oversight, and clear documentation — so schools and universities can adopt it with confidence. Responsible AI is a design requirement for us, not an afterthought.
